The new Spotlight Award sponsored by the Niagara Beautification Commission was presented on November 17 th for the month of December. This award had its beginnings at one of our meetings this summer when we talked about negative comments about our City. It was suggested that we "award" a business that "maintains their appearance in the best possible manner" and highlights their efforts to "add special touches to make their business stand out in the community. " Thus, the "spotlight" was born. A large poster depicting a spotlight will be placed in a conspicuous spot for one month with appropriate publicity. A small plaque donated by Dan The Man ( he sells promotional items on Pine Avenue and is a friend of the community) will be retained at the place of business and hopefully placed inside where all can see it.
The first award was presented to the Red Coach Inn at Two Buffalo Avenue, known for their beautiful garden and surroundings both inside and out as well as their good food and hospitality. This award winning B & B was originally owned by William Schoelkopf and Charles Peabody who opened it in 1923. The current owner, Tom Reese also owns the Bistro at the Old Fort Inn located in Youngstown, NY.
Modeled after the Old Bell Inn in Finedon, England and located 1500 feet from the American Falls, the Red Coach Inn enjoys a spectacular view of the Upper Rapids. With an inviting Tudor exterior and gardens designed by Chi Chi Soluri of Lewiston, the Red Coach Inn Bed and Breakfast is known for its romantic English country ambience and luxury accommodations. The historically minded owner considers the gardens a year- round project thus, making this selection the perfect NBC Spotlight of the Month.
Thanks to our NBC Committee members Debbie MacKay, Trudy Christman and Peggy Addoms for their efforts. Some of us attended the presentation and stayed to enjoy lunch in the beautiful dining room. Leaving at the same time as our group was a couple from New Jersey who told me it "was their wedding day". They were to be married at the Wedding Chapel and were very pleased with their accomodations at the Red Coach Inn where they were planning an evening dinner.
